Beau Travail [Mar. 20th, 2009|10:40 pm]
The Village Voice had this to say about it:

"A movie so tactile in its cinematography, inventive in its camera placement, and sensuous in its editing that the purposefully oblique and languid narrative is all but eclipsed."

I'd say that's pretty spot on. It's the weirdest thing...I've never seen a movie before that's completely sensual and so devoid of intimacy at exactly the same time.

It does linger, though. That's one of my marks of a movie worth seeing.

We had snacks, red wine, and good conversation. Gus was rude, ignored everyone, and licked his belly, but they were enchanted by him anyway (he does have that way about him.)

Sleep now.

One of the highlights of my trip to Delaware a while back was viewing the Gordon Parks exhibit. The man was a powerful photographer.

I wonder how he would have documented the Obama campaign.

Silly? Yes. But still very fun and joyous.

Yesterday's adventure involved wine, Wyeth paintings, corn and coconut ice creams, walking the labyrinth, the library, fall leaves, Hopper and Chiluly, and the theatre.

Pictures forthcoming!

The lead story of the Pittsburgh City Paper is about Carpatho-Rusyns. So weirdly timely, considering all the research I've been doing.

My dad told me tonight his oldest siblings spoke Rusyn (well, he called it "White Russian", but it's the same thing. And of course they did, because how else would they talk to my grandparents?)

Dammit, I wish I'd learned it from them. I'm teaching myself, but it's not quite the same.

I had to have JC put to sleep today. It happened so fast--he stopped eating on Friday, and just rapidly declined--wouldn't move, wouldn't go to the bathroom.

V* came and took me and we went together. When they tested his blood, his red cell count was like a 9, and it's normally supposed to be a 35 or 40. They said the only way he would have even had a small chance was a very expensive blood transfusion, and even then it would have been unlikely with his feline leukemia.

I think I'm still in shock.

hours of fun [Sep. 11th, 2008|07:54 am]
I discovered, by accident, that Project Runway has sister shows in the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, Malaysia, Australia, and the Philippines.

And they're all on YouTube.

I'm watching the Australian version so far, and it's kinda fascinating.

Enjoy!

randomness [Aug. 9th, 2008|08:46 am]
--I made vegetarian haggis for the first time this week. It turned out deliciously.

--We had 19 women at book group last night. (We read That's Revolting, which I recommend.) If we get much bigger, I don't know what we're going to do.

--I'm also learning bridge, and kinda obsessed with bidding now.

--I'm really, really glad it's Friday.

free movie passes [Aug. 5th, 2008|07:10 am]
I have a free movie pass for two to see Man on Wire at the Ritz Five this Wednesday at 7:30. If you want it, just let me know, and it's yours! (I'll figure out a way to get it to you.)

Happiest of birthdays to the lovely and multi-faceted [info]ericaceous. Here's to a year full of chocolate and songs in minor keys and hot sex and adventure and joy.

Thanks for being a great friend. Love ya.

I love that Google's celebrating Chagall's birthday today. Very fun to be hitting their page throughout the day and see those images...

Oh my god, did I sing so hard tonight. Sometimes when I sing that intensely, it really feels afterwards like I had a strong session at the gym. It works me like that.

This sing (at the A-space) just keeps getting better. I really like the woman who's leading it. I feel like she gets the idea of community, and tries to incorporate that into our sings. They also feel joyous, which I love.

We're also loud and stompy. Which also pleases me immensely. :)

The new icon is a picture of the Inclined Plane in the town where I was born. It's really fun to go up the side of the mountain and then look out over all the whole city. It still kinda amazes me that I never realized I grew up in the mountains until I moved here. It was just so ever-present to me, like fish in their water...you don't notice until you're away from it.

We're also the home of AAA baseball and about 10 steel mills (OK, four). And a bunch of Orthodox churches full of older Eastern European women like my aunts.

I have a strong sense of place there. I really miss it, some days.

Oops, and edited to say CONGRATULATIONS to [info]angledge, who's the next friend on my list to be getting hitched. The two of you seem to really compliment each other so well--I wish you a lifetime of joy and adventure!

caffeine [Jun. 25th, 2008|08:17 am]
I'm a collector of random things. Articles about restaurants I want to try, song lyrics, recipes, scraps of paper that can remind me in an instant of a place I was and a day spent.

Some of these I'm scrapbooking (the important ones), other ones I'm reading and recording, some I'm just tossing.

It's been a fun process. For example, did you know that the way to know whether your coffee's fresh is the "bloom test"?

Pour cream in your coffee. If it blooms right to the top of the cup, coffee's fresh. If it's been sitting a while, some oils will float to the top, creating a barrier.

If that happens, ask for a fresh pot. :)

I am not a huge Tom Waits fan. I might even say that I'm sort of anti-Tom.

But this song might actually convert me...

And this, I have to say, is a great Led Zepplin song.

I so want to go live in my truck.

Well, I would if I had one. And if gas weren't so expensive.

(And incidentally, love his bat pictures. I'm so fascinated by them!)

I'm also watching Mosaic. The stories of the Palestinian women talking about being separated from their children are especially powerful.

Alison Moyet, I love ya, but you sure made some strange videos.

Ah, well. It *was* the '80s...

dinner [Jun. 23rd, 2008|07:19 pm]
Dinner tonight was delicious. I had a mozzarella (the real kind), basil, and tomato sandwich on an Amoroso roll. Dessert was a blackberry-strawberry fool (basically just mashed berries and vanilla whipped cream stirred together.)

Simple and amazing.

I love this time of year. My refrigerator is bursting with fruit and vegetables now, and anything I go to make takes about zero prep time.

Solstice party was fun, though the music was a little disappointing. The drag show totally made up for it, though. Those women are gorgeous and fierce!

I also played bocce at the picnic for the first time in a long time, and I really enjoyed that. Someday I still want to have that croquet party...
